Broderick Mervyn was recognised as the youngest recipient from Oceania to receive the Vanuatu Independence Commemorative Medal. 

“As someone of Rotuman lineage who grew up in the Fiji Islands, I am profoundly honored to receive the prestigious Vanuatu Independence Commemorative Medal, marking me as the youngest recipient from Oceania,”

He expressed his heartfelt appreciation during the award ceremony at Port Vila’s State House. 

Mr Mervyn noted that the award recognised his work in youth empowerment through the ‘Professionalising Youth Work in the Pacific’ modules and highlights Vanuatu’s commitment to excellence. 

President Nikenike Vurobaravu presented the medal as part of Vanuatu’s 44th independence celebrations. 

Mr Mervyn likened the medal’s significance to the US Presidential Medal of Freedom, emphasising its role in promoting young talent across the Pacific. 

“This honor not only recognizes my contributions to youth empowerment through the ‘Professionalising Youth Work in the Pacific’ modules but also underscores Vanuatu’s exemplary commitment to excellence and its significant impact on individuals from diverse Pacific backgrounds like mine.”

He called for Pacific nations to uplift emerging leaders and establish dedicated youth agencies, pointing out the current lack of such agencies in Oceania. 

“This accolade is more than a recognition—it serves as a clarion call to all Pacific nations to uplift and empower our emerging leaders, fostering a culture that believes nothing is impossible and always strives for excellence.”

Mr Mervyn thanked his supporters and commended Vanuatu’s leadership for setting a high standard in youth empowerment.
