The Government of Japan has further strengthened its partnership with Fiji through the donation of a Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat (RHIB) to the Republic of Fiji Navy (RFN) under Japan’s Official Security Assistance (OSA) Program, aimed at enhancing maritime security across the Pacific.

The handover ceremony, held earlier today, marks another milestone in Japan’s ongoing support for Fiji’s maritime capabilities.

Earlier this year, the RFN received an underwater camera and a rescue boat as part of the same project, with three inshore patrol craft expected to arrive next year.

Receiving the donation on behalf of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), Commander of the Fiji Navy, Commodore (CFN) Humphrey Tawake Natuva, expressed deep appreciation to His Excellency Rokuichiro Michii, Japan’s Ambassador to Fiji, for Japan’s continued support to Fiji’s defence and security sectors.

“This timely donation is critical as the Fiji Navy works to enhance its presence in the maritime domain and extend its operational reach,” said Commodore Natuva.

“We are grateful for Japan’s enduring partnership and commitment to Fiji’s maritime security.”

The newly donated RHIB will be deployed by the Navy’s Small Boats Squadron and used by naval personnel for maritime law enforcement duties and search and rescue operations in harbours and nearshore areas.

Ambassador Michii, in his remarks, reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to supporting Fiji’s maritime domain awareness (MDA) and operational capacity as part of a shared vision for a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific.”

“The Government of Japan remains committed to strengthening Fiji’s maritime security capabilities, ensuring peace and stability across our shared ocean region,” said Mr. Michii.

Also present at the handover ceremony were officials from the Ministry of Defence and National Security, the RFMF, and representatives from the Embassy of Japan, along with training staff who will assist in integrating the RHIB into Fiji’s naval operations.

The donation underscores Japan’s growing role as a key partner in enhancing regional security and cooperation across the Pacific.
