Students at Bau District School now have improved access to education following the commissioning of a new 20-bed dormitory and the handover of a school boat engine, thanks to a joint effort between the Fijian Government and Japan.

The official opening was attended by the Minister for Education, Hon. Aseri Radrodro, alongside Japan’s Chargé d’Affaires ad interim, Mr. Takada.

Prior to the ceremony, the Minister paid a traditional courtesy visit to the Tui Kaba clan at Mataiwelagi, presenting a sevusevu to the Turaga Na Vunivalu.

Japan contributed $308,480 to the dormitory project, while the Ministry of Public Works executed the construction at a cost of $588,585, bringing the total investment to $897,065.

In addition, the Ministry of Education funded a $7,190 boat engine to assist students commuting by sea.

Hon. Radrodro said the new facility would significantly benefit the 113 students enrolled at the school, especially those from remote areas.

He also underscored the need for community care of the facilities to ensure their longevity and value for future generations.

“This is a clear example of what strong partnerships and targeted investments can achieve,” the Minister stated, thanking the Government of Japan for its ongoing commitment to education in Fiji.
