Former Fiji 7s and Flying Fijians star Nikola Matawalu has added another remarkable milestone to his legacy; this time off the field.
The Fijian rugby stalwart has graduated with a First Class Honours Bachelor of Science Degree in Rugby Coaching and Performance from the University of South Wales, a moment that has inspired athletes and fans across Fiji and beyond.
In a heartfelt tribute, family friend Willfred congratulated Matawalu, praising his journey from the rugby pitch to academic success.
“To see one of our very own not only shine in rugby but excel in education is a huge inspiration to every Fijian athlete around the world,” he said.
“You’ve proven that rugby and education can go hand in hand.”
A special vinaka vakalevu was extended to Mrs Matawalu and their two sons for their love and support, as well as to close friends and teammates in Bristol who stood by him throughout his academic pursuit.
Nikola Matawalu’s achievement is a powerful reminder of the importance of balancing sport with lifelong learning. It’s a message that resonates across the Pacific – dream big, play hard, study harder.
As Willfred beautifully summed up,
“You’ve raised the bar. Your story motivates the next generation of rugby players to dream big.”
