The Fiji Police Force is reiterating its warning on the dangers of over indulging in alcohol as it could result in serious injury or death following the death of two men who were involved in a road accident in Waitolu in Naitasiri on Wednesday afternoon.
Director Traffic, Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana says the two aged 21 and 45 years whilst allegedly intoxicated were involved in a fight that ended up on the main road, where they were bumped by a bus driven by a 30 year old man.
The 21 year old was pronounced dead at the Vunidawa Hospital while the second victim who was transferred to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital passed away yesterday morning.
Director Traffic, Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana says the accident could have been avoided if the two victim’s judgement were not impacted by alcohol.
He says the overindulgence of alcohol is a serious threat to all road users whether they be drivers, passengers, riders or pedestrians.
“Be responsible. We cannot stress enough the need to be responsible, and take responsibility for your actions.”
”Two families are mourning the loss of their loved ones so close to Christmas. We have been warning everyone on the dangers of alcohol as it slows down your reaction time and ability to make sound decisions regarding your safety, and road safety stakeholders will continue to push this message, however the onus is on everyone to take the advisories seriously”.
The national road death toll currently stands at 58 compared to 74 for the same period last year.
