With the election of Ratu Naiqama as the President-elect, the position of speaker of parliament has become vacant.
This means that Parliament will need to move quickly to appoint a new Speaker.
The Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has confirmed that they have a nominee and that is the retired Justice Filimone Jitoko.
Parliament elects the Speaker by simple majority and the appointee must not be a member of parliament.
The Secretary-General presides over Parliament during the election of a speaker.
In an interview after the voting of the new president was done today, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka reiterated that they have already dealt with the fraction that they had with the People’s Alliance Party.
He says that was evident in their togetherness in voting Ratu Naiqama as President.
Rabuka also stated that they know that some troublemakers are out there, who want to make something out of nothing.
He says that the Peoples’ Alliance is solid and growing.
