The Ministry of Health and Medical Services has confirmed that renovations at Vunisea Hospital in Kadavu commenced on Tuesday, 17th June 2025, thanks to funding support from the Australian Government.

The upgrade aims to enhance healthcare infrastructure for the 75 villages across nine districts on the island.

In the meantime, medical services have been temporarily relocated to various facilities around the Vunisea Government Station to ensure uninterrupted healthcare access for the community.

According to the Ministry, the following temporary arrangements have been put in place:

  • The Hospital Conference Room will operate as a temporary admission ward.
  • Pharmacy services have been shifted to the Sub-Divisional Medical Officer’s Office.
  • General Outpatient Department (GOPD) services will continue from the Old Wing of the hospital.
  • Environmental Health (Licensing) and Physiotherapy Services are now being provided from the Ministry of Forestry Office.
  • Food and Nutrition (Dietician) Services have been relocated to the Ministry of Agriculture Office.

The renovations are expected to take approximately six months.

The Ministry has urged residents to remain patient and supportive during this period, as efforts are being made to maintain quality care despite the temporary relocation.
