A 14-year-old student has used the national conversation on constitutional reform to call for greater protection of young people, stressing that their safety and future must be taken seriously.
Crystal Kumar, a Year 8 student at Korovuto Primary School and the youngest member of the Nawaicoba Crime Prevention Group, presented her views during the public consultation on the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2026 at the Nadi Civic Centre.
Her submission focused on the need to protect children and young people from drugs and other challenges that threaten their well-being.
She urged decisionmakers to recognise that young people are not only the future of the country but also deserve to have their concerns heard in decisions being made today.
Kumar called attention to the importance of prevention, education and rehabilitation, alongside stronger protection for children.
Her submission reflected the need for families, communities and relevant authorities to work together to keep young people safe and help those who may be exposed to harmful influences.
The issue of drug-related harm has become a significant concern for communities across Fiji, with families and organisations increasingly focused on the risks facing children and young people.
Kumar’s contribution brought that concern directly into the constitutional consultation, highlighting the importance of considering how proposed changes could affect the next generation.
Her participation also demonstrated the value of giving young people an opportunity to contribute to discussions about the country’s future.
At 14, she presented a perspective that decisionmakers must consider when examining issues affecting children, their rights and their safety.
“Our young people are worth protecting, our future is worth fighting for and voices deserve to be heard.”
Kumar’s message was a reminder that constitutional reform is not only about legal provisions and government structures.
It is also about the protections, opportunities and future that the country provides for its youngest citizens.
