More than 19,200 Fiji residents departed our shores in January this year but most went for short term trips.
And the Fiji Bureau of Statistics says of the 19,224 people who left, 16,659 or 86.7% were for a short-term absence of under three months and 781 or 4.1% were for over three months but would return within a 12 month period.
A total of 1,784 or 9.3% of resident departures were for a longer-term absence of 1 year or more.
The reasons for departure as reported by residents leaving for a short-term absence were as follows: holiday – 59.9%, visiting friends or relatives – 30.7%, business – 6.1%, employment – 1.3%, others – 1.0% and education/training – 0.9%.
