Rev. James Bhagwan and Graham Taylor have completed a 27-day paddle around Viti Levu, returning to the National Sailing Centre at Suva Point today after completing their Paddle for Hope journey at the same location where it began.

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change partnered in the journey, which focused on raising awareness about ending single-use plastic pollution and protecting Fiji’s rivers, coastlines and ocean.

The paddlers visited coastal villages and communities along the way, sharing messages on responsible waste management and ocean protection. Ministry staff also took part at several stops, providing information on composting, recycling and proper waste disposal, while encouraging communities to prevent plastic bottles and other rubbish from reaching drains, rivers and the ocean.

The journey also drew attention to the link between plastic pollution, ocean health and climate change. Plastics are largely produced from fossil-fuel-based materials, while their production and use generate greenhouse gas emissions. Plastic entering the ocean adds further pressure to marine ecosystems already affected by climate change.

Permanent Secretary for Environment and Climate Change, Dr Sivendra Michael, said the message comes at a significant time as Fiji prepares to host global leaders and international delegations in Nadi for the Pacific-led Pre-COP31 from 5–8 October.

Dr Michael said the journey reinforces the need for the Pacific to address climate action and ocean protection together, with actions on land eventually affecting rivers and the ocean.

As the Pacific prepares to present its collective voice at Pre-COP31 and on the road to COP31, Paddle for Hope has highlighted the connection between climate change, ocean health and everyday actions.
