Two Fijian Naval Officers are back in Fiji, after they were part of the Fiji China Naval Ship Rider Program aboard PLA Navy Qi Jiguang.

PLA NS Qi Jiguang docked at the Suva wharf this morning, carrying over 300 ocean-going training cadet from China.

The purpose of the visit is to improve the operational adaptability and capability of Chinese naval cadets, strengthen maritime practical cooperation and mutual trust with Fiji.

The two Fijian Naval officers, Sub Lt Josaia Naulu and ENS Esiroma Lagoni completed a 4 year Bachelor study in Surface Navigation in China, before returning a month ago to be part of this program. Returning home was a bittersweet moment.

Sub Lt Naulu, who is originally from Naimasimasi, Vugalei, Tailevu says the experience is something he will never forget.

“It is an absolute privileged to have represent Fiji, and especially the Fijian Navy”, he said.

“This all builds mutual respect between the two nations and hopefully we’ll embark on a new chapter”, he adds.

During the visit, Chinese and Fijian navies will carry out a series of activities including ship opening activities, exchanges and official visits.

Qi Jiguang represents the top level training ship in China, with the largest tonnage of Chinese navy.

This is Qi Jiguang’s second visit to Fiji.
