Story By:

Talica Taloga Veiraurau, clerical officer at the Office of Registrar of Land Titles and Deeds, in first appearance before the court yesterday, 1 March, stood unrepresented as she was charged with one count of abuse of office.

The charges stem from alleged actions between 11 March and 20 March, 2020, within the Suva Central Division.

Veiraurau as a clerical officer at the Office of the Registrar of Titles and Deeds, allegedly abused her authority by arbitrarily lodging a caveat on title deeds registration system over native lease 13682 without proper documentation. These actions are said to have been prejudicial to the rights of the Office of the Registrar of Titles.

During the hearing, Veiraurau was granted a $2,000 non-cash bail, with her two sureties being her sister-in-laws.

No objections were raised against her bail, subject to strict conditions. These conditions include reporting to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) every last Friday of the month, surrendering all travel documents, refraining from reoffending and adhering to a stop departure order. She is prohibited from changing her address without informing authorities.

The case has been adjourned to 22 March for further proceedings.
