Fiji women’s rights spotlighted, alarming statistics

The Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre has shed some light on the current state of women’s rights in the country yesterday, 7 March.

Centre Coordinator Shamima Ali highlighted alarming statistics and confronted key challenges faced by women in Fiji and insights on the multifaceted struggle for gender equality.

The journey of International Women’s Day is deeply rooted in the historical struggles for workers’ rights and gender equality.

FWCC Research Officer, Ilisapeci Maria says in the past year, a distressing surge in domestic violence cases took centre stage, with the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre assisting 2,484 new clients, 65% of whom sought support for issues related to domestic violence.

Senior Counsellor and Community Educator Lavenia Tuitabu says efforts by the Centre in community awareness and education aims to challenge prevailing attitudes and patriarchal systems.

The “Reclaim the Night” march will commence from the Suva Flea Market to the Government Building at 6:30 pm tomorrow.

As participants unite under the common cause of women’s rights, the event serves as a platform for diverse voices to discuss and advocate for human rights worldwide.
