Due to the heavy rain which caused damaged to water pipes, disrupting water supply to Tamavua, Toorak, Samabula, Nabua, Lami and Delainavesi areas, schools in Suva and Lami are closed.

Schools in the Suva to Nausori corridor are open.

Education Permanent Secretary Selina Kuruleca, in consultation with National Disaster Management Office and Water Authority of Fiji, is advising parents and guardians that all schools in Suva and Lami will be closed today.

All Heads of Schools, school admin teams and senior staff in the affected areas are to advise the Suva District Office on the status of their water reserves at 11am and again by 3pm and to coordinate with the District office on the status of their water tanks and pumps.

Kuruleca is liaising with NDMO and WAF for water to continue to be carted to the affected areas early this morning.

“Water trucks begun refilling school water tanks last night and will continue to do so throughout the day today, however for hygiene purposes and ensure our children health needs are prioritised we are advising that our Suva School children are kept at home,” she says.

“There is a lot of pressure on our already scarce resources and water infrastructure, to be able to sustain water pressure and use in our schools. “

Kuruleca says they will review the water levels this evening and have a further update later today.

The Secondary Schools Triple N Zone athletics competition is deferred due to the water situation in Suva.
