The Digicel Fiji U15 Girls team is in full preparation mode for the upcoming OFC U15 Girls Tournament, with sixteen talented players currently in the final phase of their camp in Suva.
This tournament is set to take place at Churchill Park in Lautoka next month.
The selection process for the team was extensive and meticulous. It began with a centralized camp in February, which brought together 41 players from across the country. From this initial pool, a group of 27 players was selected to undergo further trials during a week-long session in Suva in March.
Following thorough evaluation and assessment, the final squad of sixteen players was chosen to proudly represent Fiji in the tournament.
Angeline Chua, the Head Coach of Digicel Fiji Women’s team, emphasized the developmental aspect of the tournament. She stated that the event offers an invaluable opportunity for players, coaches, referees, and administrators from the Oceania Confederation to gain experience in an international football setting, with a strong focus on player development.
Chua highlighted that the team is guided by women’s football development officers, ensuring that the players gain exposure to the dynamics of an international football tournament. The tournament format aims to replicate the structure of the OFC Under 16 competition.
A similar competition for Under 15 boys was held last year in New Zealand, further emphasizing the commitment to youth development in the region.
Scheduled from May 6 to May 15, the tournament will feature teams from the Cook Islands, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, Tahiti, New Caledonia, Samoa, and the Solomon Islands.
Fiji will kick off its campaign against Tonga on May 6 at 4 pm, marking the beginning of what promises to be an exciting and competitive tournament for the young talents representing Fiji.
