Nasinu Town Council executive chairman Felix Magnus will tomorrow announce a proposal for a compulsory national service ordinance, aimed at empowering youth while simultaneously addressing critical social challenges.

He will make the announcement at Fiji Day celebrations at Valelevu Multi-Purpose Court in a bid to engage young people in community service, environmental projects, and skills development to foster responsibility and civic engagement.

“This isn’t just about celebrating Fiji’s past, but preparing for its future,” Mr Magnus said.

“National service will provide our young people with meaningful opportunities to contribute to society, develop their skills, and learn the value of civic duty.”

He said the national service programme would not be militarised, but rather, focused on community involvement, drawing inspiration from international programmes.

Mr Magnus also proposed the creation of a national youth think tank, tasked with devising sustainable, long-term strategies to address the challenges faced by young people in Fiji.

“We need to look ahead, ensuring that we’re building a future where our youth have the opportunities and support they need to succeed.

“This think tank would ensure a coordinated approach to tackling these issues.”
