Fiji is currently on high alert as Tropical Cyclone Rae continues to intensify and move toward the southern Lau group this afternoon.
At 5:00 PM today, the Fiji Meteorological Services confirmed that Tropical Cyclone Rae was located about 80 kilometers east-northeast of Moala and 70 kilometers south of Cicia, with maximum sustained winds of 95 km/h, gusting up to 130 km/h.
By tomorrow morning, these winds are expected to strengthen, with maximum gusts reaching 155 km/h.
The cyclone is moving south-southwest at around 17 km/h, and is forecasted to continue its track toward the Southern Lau group.
The system is expected to gradually intensify, with forecasts predicting winds of up to 110 km/h by 3:00 AM tomorrow.
A storm warning is in effect for the following islands: Lakeba, Moce, Nayau, Oneata, Vatoa, Fulaga, Namuka-I-Lau, Kabara, and Moala. Residents in these areas are urged to take necessary precautions as strong winds and heavy rain are expected.
A gale warning is also in force for a wide range of other islands, including Vanua Balavu, Tuvuca, Yacata, Cicia, parts of Vanua Levu (including Cakaudrove Province, Eastern Macuata, and Southern Bua), and several other smaller islands. These areas should be prepared for gale-force winds and potential disruptions.
A strong wind warning is in place for the rest of Vanua Levu, northeastern Viti Levu, Yasawa, Mamanuca, Kadavu, and surrounding islands. This includes areas from Tailevu North, Rakiraki, Tavua, and nearby smaller islands.
In addition to the severe winds, a heavy rain warning remains in effect for the entire Fiji group, with widespread rainfall expected to continue, especially in northern and central regions.
The combination of strong winds, rain, and rough seas presents a significant risk of flooding, especially in low-lying areas.
The cyclone is expected to reach a position approximately 240 kilometers south-southeast of Moala by early tomorrow, with further movement toward the south-southeast.
The situation remains fluid, and residents are urged to stay tuned for further updates.
Authorities are advising the public to remain indoors, avoid non-essential travel, and secure property as the storm approaches. As the system progresses, more advisories are likely to be issued.
The Fiji Meteorological Services continues to monitor the storm and will issue further updates as needed.
