Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to unity and healing as he closed the 146th Girmit Commemoration in Labasa, honouring the enduring legacy of the Girmityas the indentured Indian labourers who shaped modern Fiji.

Addressing a large crowd at Subrail Park, the Prime Minister described the legacy of the Girmityas as a cornerstone of Fiji’s history, transcending community lines and symbolising national perseverance and transformation.

Rabuka stressed the importance of moving forward as a united nation, citing initiatives such as the Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the introduction of national holidays to honour both the Girmityas and Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna.

Drawing on historical anecdotes, he highlighted moments of harmony between Indo-Fijians and iTaukei communities, noting that Fiji’s future depends on strengthening those bonds.

The Prime Minister also acknowledged India’s longstanding support for Fiji from the sugar industry to the new 100-bed Super Specialty Cardiology Hospital and joined India’s Minister of State for External Affairs, Hon. Pabitra Margherita, in recognising 27 direct descendants of Girmityas who were present at the event.
