The Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs (MDVA), in collaboration with the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), successfully hosted the 2025 Fiji – New Zealand Bilateral Defence Talks (BDTs) this week at the newly established Maritime Essential Services Centre (MESC) in Lami.
Formerly known as the Mutual Assistance Programme (MAP) Talks, the BDTs now represent a broader and more strategic engagement between the two nations, reflecting both civilian and military aspects of Fiji’s defence operations.
The 2025 BDTs served as a key platform to strengthen cooperation, discuss shared regional security priorities, and plan future engagements. The discussions focused on addressing emerging challenges and reinforcing defence collaboration through coordinated programmes in the coming year.
The New Zealand delegation was led by Brigadier Andy Shaw, Assistant Chief Strategic Commitments and Engagements, accompanied by Katie Roche, Director Pacific from the Ministry of Defence, and representatives from both the New Zealand Defence Force and the Ministry.
Ahead of the talks, the New Zealand team visited RFMF facilities to better understand operational needs and assess opportunities for deeper partnership.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to a strong and enduring defence relationship based on mutual respect, regional stability, and shared strategic interests in the Pacific.
