A 30-year-old man from Davuilevu Housing is set to appear in the Nasinu Magistrates Court this afternoon, charged in relation to an alleged online scam involving a fake rental car advertisement.

The Fiji Police Force Cyber Crime team has charged the self-employed suspect with one count of Obtaining Financial Advantage by Deception and one count of Possession of Property Suspected to be Proceeds of Crime.

According to police, the incident occurred on March 30 last year, when the accused allegedly received $260.00 from a victim via an online money transfer platform.

The payment was made after the victim engaged with a post advertising rental cars on a social media page called “Fiji Rental Cars”.

After receiving the funds, the accused allegedly failed to provide the promised vehicle or any service, prompting the victim to report the matter at Lautoka Police Station.

The accused remains in custody and will appear in court at 2:30pm today.
