What was supposed to be the start of a major trial day took an unexpected twist when four of the accused pleaded guilty.

David Heritage, Sakiusa Tuva, Ratu Osea Levula, and Cathy Tuirabe Bainisavu confirmed in court that they understood the consequences of pleading guilty.

Bainisavu had initially informed the court of her decision yesterday, while the other three entered their guilty pleas this morning.
Counsel for the four accused confirmed their stance in court.

Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions John Rabuku also sought leave from the court to file amended consolidated information, clarifying that the particulars of the offense remain unchanged.

He further informed the court that the four intend to become state witnesses in the case and have agreed to cooperate with the prosecution.

When questioned by High Court Judge Justice Aruna Aluthge about how this would work, expressing concern that such a twist could cloud his judgment, Rabuku responded that it wouldn’t, noting that Justice Aluthge has a trained legal mind.

The matter will be called again this Friday to determine how the four who pleaded guilty will proceed as state witnesses.

All nine are facing charges related to the importation and possession of 4.15 tonnes of methamphetamine, seized in Legalega, Nadi, in January 2024.

The full trial is now scheduled to begin on Monday.
