Leadership of the Weather Ready Pacific (WRP) Steering Committee has officially transitioned from Fiji to Niue during the committee’s fourth meeting held in Honiara, Solomon Islands.
Ms Rossy Mitiepo, Director of Niue Meteorological Services and the Pacific’s longest-serving meteorological director, was confirmed as the new Chair, marking a significant milestone for the regional programme.
The leadership handover follows the completion of Fiji’s term under the stewardship of Fiji Meteorological Service Director, Mr Misaeli Funaki, who guided the committee through its formative years.
Reflecting on his tenure, Mr Funaki highlighted the programme’s achievements, including the installation of weather radars, workforce development initiatives and strengthened community preparedness across the Pacific. He expressed confidence in the committee’s future under Niue’s leadership.
Ms Mitiepo acknowledged Mr Funaki’s contribution to the programme and reaffirmed Niue’s commitment to advancing Weather Ready Pacific’s mission of improving access to timely and reliable weather warnings for communities throughout the region.
Her appointment is also a landmark achievement, making her the first woman to chair an initiative affiliated with the Pacific Meteorological Council, further strengthening the role of women in regional leadership.
