The Fiji Police Force has defended its use of unconventional policing methods during the sugar cane harvesting season, saying the priority is protecting farmers and preventing cane burnings.

Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu said divisional commanders have been encouraged to adopt policing strategies that best suit their operational needs, whether through vehicle caravans, horse patrols or quick response teams.

He said deployment strategies vary across divisions, with operations focused on areas prone to cane burning and increasing police visibility in hotspots.

Commissioner Tudravu acknowledged that some of the policing methods may attract criticism or ridicule but stressed that officers would continue using strategies proven to be effective.

“It’s easy to criticize and mock officers and policing measures adopted; however, we will not let negativity hold us back as these are strategies that work best for the divisions concerned,” he said.

He added that police have received positive feedback from farmers and will continue reviewing deployment strategies based on operational demands.

The Commissioner also called on communities and political parties to support policing efforts, saying the sugar industry is vital to the livelihoods of many farming families.
