The McDonald’s Fijian Drua Women Head Coach, Mike Legge is confident the team selected for this weekend’s Super Rugby Women’s semi-final against the Reds has what it takes to deliver a strong performance.
Speaking at a press conference, Legge says he expects a tough contest from the Reds but believes his players are well prepared and ready for the challenge.
Legge also explains it isn’t just about the girls that run out on the ground.
It is also about those that push them from behind the scene that has made it all happen.
“I’ve always had confidence in our playing group. And it’s not just the girls that will run out in the starting 15 and the impact but we’ve got a really good squad this year.
The reasoning behind the success of the girls so far is because of the girls that are pushing them from behind, so I’ve got a massive confidence and amount of respect for everyone that’s in our squad and because of that we are travelling well.”
The Reds are expected to return with added motivation after their loss to the Fijian Drua Women in the final round of the regular season, but Head Coach Mike Legge believes his side will be even better prepared for the rematch.
“It’s semi-final rugby so the Reds aren’t going to be the same team that we played in the pre-season in the last game of the round robin and they are a well-coached side.
Andrew Fraser is a very good coach and so they will be analyzing everything that we’ve done in the round robin and as we’ve done with them, so we expect a very tough game.”
For their supporters, Legge has one message; “his girls deserve a sell-out crowd.”
“It’s a massive milestone for us as a club, but for me as a coach and a leader of this group, my expectation is that these girls deserve a sell-out crowd. We’re probably starved of some good rugby at the moment and our girls are producing that rugby so I just really encourage our supporters in the West and around Viti Levu just to get in and support the girls.”
The McDonald’s Fijian Drua Women will host the Queensland Reds in their Super Rugby Women’s semi-final this Saturday at Churchill Park in Lautoka, with kick-off at 1:05pm as they chase a place in the 2026 Grand Final.
