The Ministry of Youth and Sports is set to boost grassroots sports development under the 2025-2026 National Budget.
Minister Jese Saukuru says $250,000 has been allocated for sports outreach programmes, while a further $195,652 will support community sports associations.
“This budget strengthens grassroots sports through a $250,000 allocation for the sports outreach program, bringing in coaching clinics and organising sporting activities into communities throughout Fiji. A further $195,625 has been allocated to support community sports associations, recognizing the important role in identifying talent and promoting participation at the local level and also expanding opportunities for persons living with disabilities.”
He adds that improving grassroots sport also requires better facilities, with $600,000 set aside for the construction of multi-purpose courts and the upgrading and repair of sporting grounds.
“Quality facilities are equally important. The budget therefore allocates $300,000 for the construction of multi-purpose hardcourts and a further $300,000 for the upgrading of sports grounds.”
