A newly launched co-operative is set to boost community-led tourism and create new business opportunities for the people of Vanua Nalolo in Nadroga/Navosa.

The DEI Nalolo Co-operative Limited, established on June 17, 2024, brings together about 40 members who previously operated individual transport businesses. Under the new model, members will collectively provide airport transfers, tours and other visitor transport services to improve efficiency, service quality and access to the tourism market.

The launch also saw the commissioning of 12 licensed LH vehicles and two outboard motors, strengthening the co-operative’s ability to deliver safe and reliable transport services while increasing income opportunities for its members.

The event, held at the Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay and officiated by the Tui Nalolo, officially marked the start of the co-operative’s operations. The Tui Nalolo described the organisation as the commercial arm of the Vanua Nalolo, established to promote economic independence and long-term prosperity for current and future generations.

The initiative follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed in December 2025 between the Vanua Nalolo, Momi Bay Resort Limited and the Fiji National Provident Fund, strengthening partnerships between the co-operative, the Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay and Fiji’s tourism sector.

As the customary owners of the qoliqoli where the Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay is located, the Vanua Nalolo aims to utilise its land, marine resources and tourism assets to drive sustainable economic development while preserving its cultural and environmental heritage.

Representatives from the Department of Co-operatives, the Land Transport Authority, Merchant Finance and the Fiji Police Force attended the launch. The Department of Co-operatives also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the co-operative through business advisory services, governance guidance and capacity-building initiatives.
