The stories of the women who have helped shape Fiji’s democracy are now being preserved through a new publication recognising their contributions to Parliament over the past six decades.

Since 1966, 49 women have served in the Parliament of Fiji, playing an important role in shaping laws, influencing national policies, representing communities and strengthening democratic governance.

During its launch at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva, Chairperson of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians Group, Lenora Qereqeretabua said the publication recognises the achievements and experiences of these women, ensuring their contributions are documented for future generations while encouraging more women to take up leadership roles.

“Each woman featured in this publication has contributed in her own unique ways towards shaping legislations, influencing national policy, representing communities and strengthening democratic governance in Fiji” Qereqeretabua highlighted.

The publication highlights the different journeys of women parliamentarians, acknowledging the impact each has made despite serving during different periods of Fiji’s history.

Speaker of Parliament Filimone Jitoko highlighted that documenting these stories is important to ensure the legacy of women leaders is not forgotten and remains a source of inspiration for generations to come.

“This booklet preserves a legacy that might otherwise be lost in time. It captures the stories, the experiences and achievements of women whose contributions deserved to be remembered” Jitoko said.
