Two people have died following a three-vehicle collision in Navua yesterday afternoon, pushing the road death toll to 31 this year.

Police say the victims, a 70-year-old man and a 67-year-old woman, were travelling in a vehicle that allegedly veered onto the opposite lane, resulting in the crash.

Four people travelling in the other two vehicles sustained minor injuries. They were treated at Navua Hospital and later discharged.

The bodies of the two victims have been taken to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, where post-mortem examinations will be conducted.

The national road death toll now stands at 31, compared with 39 during the same period last year.

Police are again urging motorists and all road users to take greater responsibility for road safety, stressing that preventing road fatalities is not solely the responsibility of law enforcement.

According to police, fatal crash statistics for the first six months of 2026 show speeding as the leading cause of road deaths, followed by careless driving, drink driving, pedestrian error, improper overtaking and driver fatigue.

The Fiji Police Force is also calling on members of the public to report dangerous driving behaviour, warning that it poses a serious risk to all road users.
