The Biosecurity Authority of Fiji has confirmed that the biosecurity emergency declaration for the Yasawa Group and Mamanuca Islands remains in effect as authorities continue working to contain and eliminate the Tongan Fruit Fly (Bactrocera facialis).

Residents and travellers are reminded that host fruits and vegetables cannot be transported out of the declared areas. Restricted produce includes mangoes, guavas, papayas, citrus fruits, avocados, breadfruit, tomatoes, cucurbits and other identified host materials.

Authorities warn that anyone found breaching the movement restrictions could face a fine of up to FJD$1,000.

The Biosecurity Authority says even a single piece of fruit moved beyond the affected islands could allow the pest to spread, threatening Fiji’s agriculture, food security, farmers’ livelihoods and export markets.

Travellers are being urged to check their luggage before departing the Yasawa Group or Mamanuca Islands to ensure they are not carrying any restricted fruits or vegetables.
