A search and rescue operation is underway for an overdue boat carrying six people that failed to arrive at its destination in the Lau Group.

The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) Fiji was activated yesterday evening after receiving reports that the vessel had departed Namuka Island at around 10 am bound for Fulaga Island but did not arrive.

According to the JRCC, three fibreglass boats left Namuka Island for Fulaga, but only two reached their destination safely.

The missing boat is described as a white half-cabin fibreglass boat powered by a 40-horsepower outboard engine.

Relevant authorities, mariners and nearby communities have been alerted, with search efforts continuing despite adverse weather conditions. Strong winds and rough to very rough seas are hampering the operation.

Mariners travelling between Namuka, Fulaga and surrounding waters are being urged to keep a sharp lookout for the missing boat and its six occupants. Anyone with information or who sights the vessel is asked to contact the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Fiji on the toll-free number 1539 or report to the nearest police station.

The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) is also reminding all mariners to monitor official weather forecasts and marine warnings, avoid travelling in unsafe conditions, and ensure vessels are seaworthy and equipped with sufficient fuel, lifejackets, reliable communication equipment and other essential safety gear before heading out to sea.
