Fiji is strengthening the way it measures, monitors and reduces greenhouse gas emissions from the waste sector, as the Government works to turn its national climate commitments into practical and measurable action.

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change this week (03.09.26) convened the Waste Sector Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) Targets, Mitigation Measures and Monitoring Workshop at USP’s Statham Campus, bringing together representatives from Government ministries, development partners, municipal councils and other key stakeholders.

The workshop is supported by the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC), in partnership with the Center for Clean Air Policy (CCAP) and ImplementaSur, under a project supporting the inclusion of waste targets in Fiji’s NDC 3.0.

Fiji’s waste sector accounts for approximately 9.7% of the country’s total greenhouse gas emissions, with methane generated from sources including landfills, wastewater treatment facilities, industries and local farms.

Director Climate Change, Ms Senivasa Waqairamasi, while delivering the opening remarks emphasized that strengthening action in the waste sector provides benefits which extend directly to communities.

A key focus of the workshop is strengthening Fiji’s Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) framework for the waste sector. This will enable Government to more accurately measure emissions reductions, monitor progress and report on the impact of mitigation measures being implemented.

Participants are reviewing proposed MRV protocols and indicators and providing technical input on monitoring parameters, institutional responsibilities and how information should be collected and shared.

This work builds on Fiji’s existing waste-management efforts while strengthening the data and monitoring systems needed to demonstrate results.

Strengthening monitoring means Government can better understand where emissions are coming from, measure whether interventions are working and use reliable evidence to guide future investment and action.

The outcome will support implementation of Fiji’s NDC 3.0 waste-sector targets, helping ensure the country’s climate commitments are backed by credible data, clear responsibilities and measurable progress.
