A volcanic eruption in Indonesia’s Sunda Strait has disrupted air travel across the country, forcing the closure of several airports as volcanic ash spread over parts of Java and Sumatra.

Anak Krakatau, the volcanic island located between Java and Sumatra, erupted for about 30 seconds in the early hours of Sunday after showing increased activity since Friday.

No deaths or injuries have been reported, and authorities have not ordered evacuations. However, residents and visitors have been warned to remain at least two miles from the crater, with the nearest settlement located more than 10 miles away.

Footage captured from the sea showed lava being ejected high into the air as the volcano erupted.

Volcanic ash reached parts of Jakarta and Lampung province, prompting AirNav Indonesia to close airspace around Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta and Halim Perdanakusuma airports, along with four other airports, including Radin Inten II Airport in Lampung.

By Sunday afternoon, the airspace restrictions had affected 516 flight movements. Of these, 202 were at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, affecting around 22,800 passengers.

Authorities continue to monitor the volcano and the movement of volcanic ash across affected areas.
