The Fijiana 15s are preparing for another stern test against Spain tomorrow after opening their campaign with a victory over Japan.
Spain has won both of the teams’ previous World Rugby International Women’s Rugby Union Competition (WXV) meetings, but Fiji heads into the latest encounter with valuable preparation and growing confidence.
The Fijiana tested themselves against South Africa at home in August earlier this year, before securing a win over Japan in Japan last weekend.
Head Coach Willie Walker reveals that they have simplified the game plan while focusing on the carry, clean-out, catch-and-pass and awareness, allowing the players to maintain structure while expressing their natural style.
“We’ve gone back to a fairly simple game plan and style that allows our players to get into some sort of structure or shape but still allows them to play their natural instinctive game style.”
He also confirms the squad is fully fit heading into Sunday’s match, with only minor knocks managed during the week.
“We’re fully fit this weekend. Everybody is available which is good. There’s just been a few niggles that we’ve managed during the week but nothing that will have an effect on selection.”
Captain Kolora adds the team has prepared well during its three-day training camp in Hong Kong.
“The training in Hong Kong has been going on for the past three days and now we’ve prepared well for Spain and we are expecting a good and hard game from them on Sunday.”
Meanwhile, Spain edged Fiji in their previous two World Rugby International Women’s Rugby Union Competition (WXV) meetings, but the Fijiana will be aiming to overturn that record when they meet again tomorrow at the Kai Tak Youth Sports ground with kick-off scheduled for 4pm.
