The Vodafone Fijiana 15s have etched their names into the history books after securing their first-ever victory over Spain, producing a remarkable late comeback to claim a thrilling 38-32 win at Kai Tak Youth Sports Ground in Hong Kong.

Fiji looked destined for defeat when they trailed 32-19 with just ten minutes remaining, but a spirited fightback saw the side score three unanswered tries to snatch victory and continue their impressive form on the international stage.

The Fijiana made a dream start when Atelini Buna showcased her pace and power, weaving through multiple defenders before touching down between the posts. Varanisese Qoro added the conversion to hand Fiji an early advantage.

Spain responded immediately through the boot of Amalia Argudo, who slotted a penalty before Fiji struck again. A quick tap caught the Spanish defence off guard, allowing Josivini Naihamu to dive over in the corner and extend Fiji’s lead.

However, Spain gradually wrestled control of possession and territory. After another penalty from Argudo, a series of slick offloads carved open Fiji’s defence, with Valentina Pérez crossing for Spain’s opening try.

Both sides traded scores before halftime. Fiji’s powerful number eight Alfreda Fisher crashed over following a quick lineout, but Spain answered through winger Claudia Cano, who finished in the corner after a perfectly executed cross-kick from Argudo. The Spanish playmaker converted and helped her side take a slender 20-19 lead into the break.

Spain continued their momentum after halftime, with Pérez scoring her second try of the afternoon from a clever lineout move. Despite several attacking opportunities, Fiji struggled to break through Spain’s resilient defence.

The Europeans appeared to have one hand on the victory after another well-worked try, sparked by Argudo’s direct running, stretched their lead to 32-19.

But Fiji refused to surrender.

From the restart, Ivamere Rokowati Nabura burst through the Spanish defensive line to score and reduce the deficit to six points. With momentum firmly on their side, the Fijiana launched wave after wave of attacks.

Their persistence paid off as Adi Salote Nailolo crossed to bring Fiji within touching distance before Repeka Adi Tove completed the stunning turnaround with the decisive score that sealed a famous 38-32 victory.

The win marks Fiji’s first-ever triumph over Spain and highlighted the side’s resilience under pressure.

Head coach Willie Walker’s tactical adjustments in the final quarter proved crucial, as Fiji’s physicality and attacking intensity overwhelmed the Spanish defence to complete one of their most memorable comebacks in recent years.
