The standard of Fiji’s domestic rugby league competitions needs to improve if the country is to strengthen its international pathway, says Nadera Panthers head coach and Fiji National Rugby League committee member Vula Dakuitoga.

Dakuitoga says Fiji Bati head coach Mick Potter’s visits to local competitions have highlighted gaps in preparation, conditioning and game knowledge.

“Unfortunately, the standards of the local competitions doesn’t justify us there. I’m so thankful that Mick Potter has been going around since he came into the country, not like the other coaches.”

“He was visiting and seeing the type of standard and unfortunately, the standard of local rugby in Fiji is not up to par.”

He says the focus over the next four years must be on lifting the standard of local rugby league and developing players capable of competing at the highest level.

“So, what we will try and do for the next four years is to try and just bring the game up and bring the standard up. In terms of the preparation, the conditioning and the knowledge of the game.”
