Seaweed farmers in Nanuca, Cakaudrove, are set to resume production following the rebuilding of their farming site with stronger infrastructure designed to withstand harsh marine conditions.

The Ministry of Fisheries Seaweed Team has completed construction of a new 1,000-line farm structure after the previous site was severely damaged over the past three months.

Strong marine currents and severe weather had disrupted the farm and affected seaweed production in the community.

The rebuilt structure features reinforced posts and additional braces, providing greater stability and strength against strong currents and difficult weather conditions.

As part of the restoration work, the fisheries team salvaged seaweed that survived the damage and relocated it to the new structure.

Additional seedlings will be brought in from Druadrua and planted at the Nanuca farm to replenish stocks and help rebuild production.

For the Nanuca community, the restoration provides an opportunity to get seaweed farming back on track while improving the farm’s ability to withstand future weather and sea conditions.

The effort is also expected to help protect an important source of livelihood for local farmers.
