Fiji Rugby has appointed former Olympian and international rugby figure Andrew Durutalo as its new Head of Men’s High Performance, marking a significant step in strengthening the nation’s rugby development system.

Durutalo brings an impressive mix of international playing experience, sports administration expertise, commercial leadership and strategic management to the role.

A product of Fiji Rugby’s High-Performance Unit Academy, Durutalo captained Fiji’s Under-19 and Under-21 teams before building a career overseas. He later represented the United States at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, the 2015 Rugby World Cup and the 2013 Rugby World Cup Sevens, while also playing professionally in Japan, England and the United States.

Following his playing career, Durutalo moved into sports leadership, serving in senior roles including Director of Rugby Operations and General Manager at Hong Kong Football Club. He has also worked as an International Sports Envoy with the U.S. Department of State and contributed to athlete-focused initiatives through the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee.

As Head of Men’s High Performance, Durutalo will oversee the alignment and progression of Fiji Rugby’s player and coaching pathways, helping to develop talent from age-grade programmes through to the Flying Fijians.

Fiji Rugby General Manager High Performance Naca Cawanibuka said Durutalo’s appointment strengthens the organisation’s vision of building a sustainable and internationally competitive high-performance system.

Cawanibuka said Durutalo’s global experience, combined with his understanding of Fiji’s rugby culture, will help raise standards and further connect age-grade rugby, professional pathways and the national teams.

Working alongside coaches, sports scientists, analysts, medical staff and development personnel, Durutalo is expected to play a key role in enhancing talent identification, player development and performance systems across the organisation.

His appointment signals Fiji Rugby’s continued commitment to professionalizing its high-performance environment and creating a clear pathway for future generations of Fijian rugby talent.
