Defending champions Vanuatu will enter the 2026 MSG Prime Minister’s Cup determined to retain the title they captured memorably last year, but this time under the guidance of a new coach.

The Pacific nation arrives in Suva carrying the confidence of its historic triumph in the previous edition, where it defeated Papua New Guinea in a dramatic penalty shootout to claim the trophy for the first time in 25 years.

However, the architect of that success, German coach Lars Hopp, is no longer in charge. In his place is former Vanuatu international and the country’s all-time leading goalscorer, Richard Iwai, who will lead the side in this year’s campaign.

Despite a change on the sidelines and the absence of several key players, Vanuatu remains one of the strongest teams in the competition and will be looking to build on last year’s achievement.

The squad still boasts a wealth of experience, with Azariah Soromon, Kathy Iamak, John Alick, Kaloran Firiam and veteran striker Tony Kaltack expected to play key roles throughout the tournament.

Vanuatu National Sports Authority representative Trevor Toka believes the team is ready to embrace the challenge and compete strongly against the region’s best.

With a new coach, experienced leaders and the confidence of defending champions, Vanuatu will be aiming to prove that last year’s success was no fluke as they pursue back-to-back MSG Prime Minister’s Cup titles.
