For families across Vanua Levu, farming means more than producing food, it provides income, employment and supports local communities.

That contribution was recognised at the Northern Farmers Awards in Labasa, where farmers, communities and agricultural businesses were honoured across more than 40 categories.

Farmers are also facing growing challenges from changing weather, reduced rainfall and El Niño, putting pressure on water, crops and livestock.

Minister Mosese Bulitavo urged farmers and communities to prepare early through water conservation, climate-smart farming and diversification.

He also highlighted the important roles of women and young people in the future of agriculture.

Despite the challenges, farmers continue to plant, harvest and invest, making their work an important part of Fiji’s food security and development.
