A search and rescue operation is underway in Lau for a 68-year-old man from Udu Village, Totoya, who failed to return after taking his new boat out for a test run.

The man reportedly left the village on Thursday in a white fibreglass boat named JAHAZIAH, heading towards Cakauloaloa Reef.

Concern grew when he did not return, prompting his wife to report the matter and a search party to be organised.

The Republic of Fiji Navy, Police and local community members are working together in the search, which is being coordinated by the Rescue Coordination Centre Fiji. A Navy vessel has also been deployed to assist with the operation.

Maritime communities and members of the public who may have information about the missing man or his boat are urged to contact the authorities on 1681.
