The National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDRMO) has brought together key government agencies to strengthen Fiji’s preparedness for ongoing El Niño conditions and the 2026–2027 Tropical Cyclone Season.

The operational-level meeting was held yesterday, at the National Emergency Operations Centre, bringing together National Cluster Focal Points and Disaster Service Liaison Officers.

Discussions focused on the current national situation, drought indicators affecting critical sectors and coordinated measures to address emerging risks and their potential impact on communities.

Agencies also reviewed joint assessments and information sharing, Operational Readiness Checks, tropical cyclone preparedness and response plans, as well as arrangements for improving coordination during emergencies.

Representatives from various government ministries and agencies, including the Ministries of Health, Education, Agriculture, Forestry and Environment, Energy Fiji Limited and the Water Authority of Fiji, attended the meeting.

The NDRMO says a whole-of-government approach and stronger cooperation between agencies are essential to reducing the effects of drought and other climate-related hazards.

It also stressed that disaster preparedness is a shared responsibility involving government agencies, communities and individual households.
