The Australian Government has announced an additional FJ$23.5 million to support Fiji’s fight against HIV, strengthening the country’s national outbreak response as cases continue to rise.

The funding was announced during the opening of the new National Sexual and Reproductive Health and HIV Office in Suva under the Fiji-Australia Vuvale Union Health Partnership.

It will support prevention programmes, treatment, community outreach and strengthen Fiji’s health response.

Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs Penny Wong highlighted that the investment reflects Australia’s commitment to standing alongside Fiji as it responds to one of its biggest public health challenges.

“Today, as part of our Vuvale Union Health Partnership, I’m pleased to announce 23.5 million Fiji dollars in support of your national HIV outbreak response plan.”

“Responding to HIV is not just a health challenge, it’s a community challenge. Community groups are helping reduce stigma and connect people with services, and Australia is committed to working alongside Fiji in this effort” Wong highlighted.

Minister for Health and Medical Services Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu said the funding will help strengthen Fiji’s national HIV response, with support from development partners contributing to prevention, treatment and community-based programmes.

He added that the funding will be directed towards the country’s overall HIV response plan, ensuring resources continue to reach those who need them most.

“Part of the programme within the taskforce is already costed, and the support from Australia, New Zealand and other partners assists that programme”.

“I cannot say exactly what every allocation will be targeted for, but rest assured it will be used for a good purpose as part of the national HIV response” Lalabalavu said.
