Cabinet has endorsed the Government’s proposed positions on recommendations made by the Constitution Review Commission.

The proposals were considered by the Cabinet Subcommittee on the Review of the Constitution, including their legal, policy, governance and implementation implications.

The review also considered financial and administrative requirements, transitional arrangements and views raised during the Commission’s consultation process.

Among the Government’s proposed reforms is retaining “Fijian” as the common national identity for all citizens, while constitutionally recognising the iTaukei people as itaukeinivanua o Viti.

The proposals also include strengthening the Bill of Rights and protections for women, children, vulnerable groups and minority communities.

The Government is also proposing constitutional protection for customary land ownership, qoliqoli rights and group rights, alongside stronger accountability and integrity institutions.
