An eight-year-old child has died after being struck by a vehicle in Vakabalea, Navua, on Tuesday evening.

The incident happened along Queens Road on August 18, when the child was reportedly attempting to cross the road and was hit by a vehicle driven by a 32-year-old man.

The child was taken to Navua Hospital, where medical officials later confirmed the death.

Police are expected to question the driver as investigations into the incident continue.

Two other children, aged eight and nine, were also injured in a separate road accident along Adi Davila Road in Nakasi on Wednesday afternoon.

Police said the children allegedly emerged from in front of a parked bus while crossing the road and were struck by a vehicle driven by a 42-year-old man. Both children remain admitted at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital.

Meanwhile, a nine-year-old girl was injured after being struck by a vehicle along Narewa Road on Wednesday afternoon.

She allegedly crossed the road suddenly and was hit by a vehicle driven by a 52-year-old man.

The girl is currently receiving treatment at Lautoka Aspen Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Kasiano Vusonilawe is urging parents, guardians, motorists and communities to take greater care around children, particularly as the school holidays begin.

With increased movement and several large gatherings expected around the country in the coming weeks, police are reminding motorists to remain vigilant and parents and guardians to closely supervise children and reinforce safe road-crossing practices.
