Former Silver Fern Vilimaina Davu says becoming the only Fijian to represent New Zealand came with many challenges, but her sacrifices, resilience and belief in herself made the journey worthwhile.

Now in Fiji as head coach of the Auckland Fijians at the Fiji Invitational Tournament, Davu hopes her story will inspire the next generation.

She represented the Silver Ferns from 2000 to 2006, earning 60 Test caps.

Being the only Fijian woman till date to have ever donned the silver ferns colors, Vilimaina Davu says getting to such an international level required two things- commitment and sacrifice.

“For me, getting to that level and standard to be an international player took a lot of hardwork, commitment and sacrifice. To be the best, commitment and sacrifice needs to be there for you to get there.”

Davu believes Fiji is blessed with talented players capable of competing on the international stage, but says self-belief is often the biggest hurdle.

“Trust in yourself first before you can allow someone else to trust in you to play for their country.”

These are the sentiments that Davu has echoed for young girls who would also want to also play at such an international level.

Davu hopes her journey will inspire the next generation of Fijian netballers to believe in their abilities, embrace the sacrifices required and pursue opportunities beyond Fiji’s shores.
