The defence in a murder case involving a man accused of brutally killing his grandfather will challenge an alleged confession made during a police caution interview.

Charles Laxton Sundar appeared before Justice Usaia Ratuvili in the High Court in Suva this morning.

Senior Legal Aid lawyer Timoci Varinava informed the court that the defence intends to file voir dire grounds to challenge the admissibility of Sundar’s alleged confession made during a caution interview with police.

It is alleged that on the 12th of July last year, at Navokadamu Settlement in Lutu, Wainibuka, Sundar used a cane knife to slit his grandfather’s throat, causing injuries that resulted in his death.

The State told the court that Sundar had made a full admission to police. It is further alleged that after the killing, Sundar dismembered his grandfather’s body and placed the remains in a sack.

Despite the alleged admission, Sundar has denied the charge.

The matter has been adjourned to the 6th of July.
