Fiji is facing increasing water shortages as strengthening El Niño conditions bring prolonged dry weather, placing pressure on water sources across the country.

Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, told Parliament today, November 3, that 19 of Fiji’s 44 operational water sources have reached critical levels, affecting approximately 24,600 people.

The Western and Northern Regions are now under Crisis Response levels, while the Central Eastern Region is operating under Early Action measures.

The Western Division is the hardest hit, with 18,798 people affected, followed by 3,510 in the North and 2,276 in the Central Eastern Region.

Mr Tuisawau warned that Vaturu Dam, which supplies Nadi and about 70 percent of Lautoka, could fall below its critical level around November 8 or 9 if current conditions persist.

Fiji Meteorological Service forecasts indicate a very high chance of very dry conditions continuing through December, with strong El Niño conditions likely to persist into early 2027.

The Minister is urging households, businesses and communities to conserve water by reducing non-essential use, fixing leaking taps and avoiding activities such as washing vehicles and watering gardens.

The Water Authority of Fiji and relevant agencies are continuing to monitor water sources and coordinate measures to protect essential supplies.
