Rassie Erasmus already knows what it takes to guide South Africa to Rugby World Cup glory, but the road to another title could present a demanding challenge for the Springboks coach.

With the tournament draw now offering an early look at South Africa’s potential route, Erasmus’ side are expected to avoid major threats in the opening stages and could be favourites to finish top of their pool and reach the Round of 16.

However, the challenge facing Erasmus could become significantly tougher once the knockout phase begins.

The projected route could place the Springboks against some of rugby’s leading nations, meaning Erasmus will need to ensure his squad is at its strongest when the pressure rises.

His preparations are also complicated by injuries to two experienced forwards.

Kwagga Smith and RG Snyman have been ruled out for the remainder of the 2026 season after suffering ACL injuries, leaving Erasmus with important decisions to make as he continues shaping his squad.

Both players played influential roles in South Africa’s victory over New Zealand last year, making their absence another consideration for Erasmus as he looks ahead to the World Cup.

With more than a year before the tournament begins, the draw has given Erasmus an early glimpse of the challenge ahead.

While the Springboks may have a favourable start, their pursuit of another World Cup title could ultimately depend on how well Erasmus prepares his team to overcome the world’s strongest rugby nations.
