Sugarcane farmers will receive a guaranteed payment of $85 per tonne for the 2026 crop season, with Government stepping in to bridge the gap between the forecast cane price and rising production costs.

The assurance comes after the Sugar Industry Tribunal announced a forecast cane price of $57.40 per tonne under the Master Award, based on prevailing world market prices for raw sugar.

Acknowledging the financial pressures faced by farmers due to increased fuel prices and higher harvesting and transportation expenses, Government has committed to providing a top-up payment to ensure growers receive the guaranteed rate of $85 per tonne.

While reaffirming its support for the industry, Government expressed concern over the continued decline in sugarcane production despite significant investments and assistance provided to growers.

These include cane planting grants, fertiliser and weedicide subsidies, harvesting support payments, farmer incentives, cane access road upgrades, lease renewal assistance and more than $36 million in top-up payments for the 2025 crop season.

Government is calling on all stakeholders, including mill operators, cane cutters, lorry operators, landowners and farmers, to work together to improve productivity and strengthen the industry’s performance.

Farmers have also been encouraged to diversify into other crops and livestock to strengthen household incomes, improve food security and reduce the impact of external factors such as rising fuel and fertiliser costs.

The 2026 cane crushing season is scheduled to begin on 9 June, with Government extending its best wishes to all stakeholders for a successful harvest.
