The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission has approved a 22.5% temporary bus fare adjustment, effective from 9th October.
The adjustment will apply to regulated bus routes in Viti Levu, Vanua Levu and Taveuni for six months, ending on 9th April 2027.
However, passengers will not pay the higher fares.
The Government will absorb the increase and compensate bus operators directly, meaning paying passengers will continue to pay the same fares.
The FCCC highlighted that the decision follows a review of revenue assessments and renewed submissions from bus operators, along with forecasts of possible increases in fuel costs in the coming months.
It says the adjustment is intended to ensure bus services continue without disruption while the industry faces rising operating costs.
The FCCC will continue monitoring global fuel prices and industry conditions and may reassess the temporary adjustment if international fuel prices stabilise or decline.
Passengers are also reminded to report any overcharging or other unfair trading practices to the FCCC.
